How to Fix a Shadowban on X: What to Stop, What to Keep Doing and How Long It Takes

There is no button for removing a shadowban on X, and no trick that lifts one instantly. What does work, in most cases, is removing whatever made the account look spammy and then using it normally for a while. This guide walks through the steps in order: confirm the problem, stop the triggers, keep posting naturally, avoid the mistakes that make things worse, and check whether you have recovered.

Step 1: Confirm it is really a restriction

Before changing anything, make sure the problem is real. Check from an account that does not follow you: search "from:yourname", open the Latest tab and see whether your recent posts appear. Then open a post you replied to and look for your reply.

Separate account-wide problems from single posts. If most of your posts appear in search but a few do not, the issue is probably the content of those posts (a link or a phrase), not your whole account. Also check whether "Mark media you post as having material that may be sensitive" is turned on in your settings, because that hides media posts from many people's search results.

Step 2: Stop the behaviors that trigger limits

Limits usually follow patterns that look automated or spammy. X will not tell you which one applied, so stop anything on this list that sounds familiar.

  • Mass following and unfollowing
  • Posting the same text or link repeatedly
  • Stuffing posts with hashtags, or using trending tags that have nothing to do with the post
  • Sending near-identical replies or mentions to strangers
  • Using follower, like or engagement services, or aggressive automation tools

Step 3: Keep using the account naturally

You do not need to go completely silent. Post at a normal pace, write in your own words, and talk with people you already interact with. Natural, human activity is what you want the account's recent history to show.

Keep hashtags to one or two that actually match the post. When you share a link, add a sentence or two of your own so the post is not just a link. Review your connected apps under Settings and remove anything you no longer use or do not recognize.

Mistakes that make it worse

Some common reactions slow recovery down or have no effect at all.

  • Deleting and reposting the same post over and over, which looks like repeated posting
  • Creating a new account or posting the same content from a second account
  • Paying for "shadowban removal" services or giving your password to any site that asks for it
  • Changing many things at once while re-checking every few minutes, which makes it impossible to see what helped

How long recovery takes

X does not publish a timeline. Based on what users report, many accounts return to search within a few days to about two weeks after the triggering behavior stops, while some take a month or longer.

If the same behavior comes back during that time, assume the clock starts over. Give it at least one to two weeks of clean, normal use before judging the result.

How to check whether you have recovered

Every few days, search "from:yourname" in the Latest tab from an unrelated account. When new posts appear, the search limit has lifted. Do the same for replies.

You can also use X Shadowban Checker. Results are cached for up to an hour, so checking more often than that will not show anything new. Once a day is plenty.

When it lasts a long time

If nothing changes after a month, or if X shows a notice that some features are limited, contact X through its Help Center. Limits that come with a notice, such as locks and suspensions, can sometimes be resolved through an appeal.

Summary

Confirm the problem from the outside, stop spam-like patterns, keep posting like a person, avoid quick fixes, and give it time. It is slower than people hope, but it is what usually works.

Want to check your own account? X Shadowban Checker tests search, search suggestions and replies for free. Results are estimates based on public information and do not guarantee X's internal status.
