What Is a Shadowban on X? Search Ban, Suggest Ban, Ghost Ban and Reply Deboosting Explained

A shadowban is the popular name for a situation where your account still works, but fewer people can see what you post. Nothing tells you it is happening: you can post, reply and like as usual, yet your posts stop showing up in search, your replies seem invisible, and engagement drops. This guide explains what the word usually refers to, the four types people talk about, and how to tell a real restriction apart from an ordinary dip in reach.

"Shadowban" is a nickname, not an official term

X does not use the word "shadowban" for any of its enforcement actions. What it does say publicly is that it may limit the reach of accounts or posts that look spammy, manipulative or otherwise against its rules, for example by not recommending them or by ranking them lower in replies and search.

So when people say "shadowban", they usually mean one of several different limits that can be seen from the outside. Thinking about which specific limit you are dealing with is more useful than asking whether you are "shadowbanned" in general.

The four types people usually mean

Third-party checkers, including this one, usually test four things. Each one describes a different place where your content can disappear for other people.

  • Search Ban: your posts do not appear when someone searches for them, even with a search like "from:yourname".
  • Suggest Ban (search suggestion ban): your account does not appear in the suggestions that pop up while someone types your username into the search box.
  • Ghost Ban: your replies do not show up in the reply thread for other people. You can see them, but the person you replied to may not.
  • Reply deboosting: your replies are still there, but they are pushed below "Show more replies", so few people scroll far enough to read them.

Why accounts get limited

X does not explain individual decisions, so the exact cause is rarely certain. In practice, limits tend to follow behavior that looks automated or spammy to X's systems. The more of these patterns an account shows at the same time, the more likely a limit becomes.

  • Following and unfollowing many accounts in a short time
  • Posting the same text or the same link again and again
  • Adding many hashtags, or trending hashtags unrelated to the post
  • Sending similar replies or mentions to lots of people you do not know
  • Using services or automation tools that promise more followers or likes
  • Being reported or blocked by many people in a short period

A drop in reach is not always a shadowban

Reach on X goes up and down for many ordinary reasons: the topic, the time of day, what else is trending, and changes to the recommendation algorithm. A slow week is not proof of a restriction.

Other settings can also look like a shadowban. If your media is marked as sensitive, many people will not see those posts in search because their own settings hide sensitive content. Brand-new posts can take a little while to appear in search. Protected (private) accounts cannot be seen from the outside at all.

How to check

The most reliable check is to look from an account that does not follow you. Search "from:yourname" and open the Latest tab to see whether your recent posts appear. Open a post you replied to and see whether your reply is visible, and whether it is hidden under "Show more replies".

X Shadowban Checker runs these checks for you from an unrelated account and shows a BAN, Caution or OK result for each one. When something could not be measured directly, the result is labeled as an estimate so you know how much weight to give it.

Summary

A shadowban is not a single official penalty but a group of visibility limits: Search Ban, Suggest Ban, Ghost Ban and reply deboosting. They usually follow spam-like patterns, and many apparent cases turn out to be normal swings in reach or settings such as sensitive media.
